DBT-NII receives trademark for India’s First Indigenous Tumour Antigen
  • The SPAG9 antigen developed by the National Institute of Immunology (NII) has received the ASPAGNIITM trademark, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) said.

  • India’s first indigenous tumour antigen SPAG9 was discovered in 1998 by Dr Anil Suri who heads the Cancer Research Programme at the NII, a DBT institute.

  • “Currently, ASPAGNIITM is being used in dendritic cell (DC) based immunotherapy in cervical, ovarian cancer and will also be used in breast cancer,” the DBT said in a statement.

  • Blockchain technology company Blockstream Mining said that Square Inc will invest $5 million to build an open-source, solar-powered bitcoin mining facility at one of Blockstream’s U.S. sites.
  • Blockstream, in an announcement on its blog, said the “facility will be a proof-of-concept for a 100% renewable energy Bitcoin mine at scale.“
  • We hope to show that a renewable mining facility in the real world is not only possible but also prove empirically that Bitcoin accelerates the world toward a sustainable future,” the release states.

Gujarat's Kevadia to host 'India's first' e-vehicles-only area
  • The Statue of Unity Area Development and Tourism Governance Authority (SOUADTGA) said it will develop the “country’s first electric vehicles-only area” in Gujarat’s Kevadia.
  • In its statement, the authority said that the area surrounding the 182-metre tall Statue of Unity in Kevadia in Gujarat’s tribal-dominated Narmada district will be converted into an electric-vehicles-only area in a phased manner.
  • The announcement comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Kevadia, which houses the world’s tallest Statue of Unity, will become the country’s first electric vehicle city.

  • In a statement, Pattnaik said he created an 8 foot by 13 foot sculpture with seven tonnes of sand, giving a message that people can lead a healthy life in a safe environment.

  • “Thank you international sand artist @sudarsansand for this beautiful contribution to #GenerationRestoration,” UNEP posted on social media platforms along with pictures of the sand art.

  • Pattnaik said it was an honour for him to get appreciation from the United Nations agency.

HRD Minister approves Performance Grading Index 2019-20 for States, UTs
  • HRD Minister, approved the release of Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2019-20 for States and UTs of India today. The Government has introduced the Performance Grading Index with a set of 70 parameters to catalyse transformational change in the field of school education.
  • The PGI for States and Union Territories was first published in 2019 with reference year 2017-18. The PGI : States/UTs for 2019-20 is the third publication in this series.
  • The PGI exercise envisages that the index would propel States and UTs towards undertaking multi-pronged interventions that will that will bring about the much-desired optimal education outcomes.
  • The PGI helps the States/UTs to pinpoint the gaps and accordingly prioritise areas for intervention to ensure that the school education system is robust at every level.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings on the occasion of 24th BIMSTEC Day on June 6, 2021. In his message, the Prime Minister acknowledged the progress made by the grouping on several fronts in recent years. He stressed on the need to continue to work together in the fight against the pandemic
  • PM Modi said BIMSTEC Day has been marked amidst a difficult phase of the COVID pandemic. It is an unprecedented challenge and a testing time for all.
  • Prime Minister Modi also appreciated the enhanced regional cooperation under the BIMSTEC framework which has intensified substantially in recent years. He emphasized on the progress that has been made on several fronts including the finalization of the BIMSTEC master plan for transport connectivity and the text of the BIMSTEC Charter

  • Red Bull’s Sergio Perez won a chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix with both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton failing to finish.
  • Sebastian Vettel for Aston Martin and Pierre Gasly for Alpha Tauri completed the unexpected podium. Verstappen crashed with five laps to go and the race at his mercy. Hamilton then locked up at the restart when on target for second.
  • The drama on the streets of Baku left Verstappen retaining the lead in the drivers standings.
  • This was the first win for Perez since joining Red Bull.
  • Perez said, “I’m so happy for today. Normally Baku is pretty crazy but I have to say sorry to Max. He deserved the win today and it would have been good for the team to get a 1-2 but the win is a fantastic result.”

  • Foreign minister of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid was elected as the President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly with an overwhelming three-fourth majority, with 143 in favour, 48 against and no abstentions and no invalid votes.
  • This is a post held on an annual basis, rotated amongst various regional groupings. The 76th session (2021-22) is the turn of the Asia-Pacific group. This is the first time that the Maldives will be occupying the office of the President of the UN General Assembly.

  • Thomas Vijayan’s photo of an orangutan clinging to a tree will make you do a double take – and that’s precisely what the judges of Nature TTL Photography Awards loved about it. “It’s one of those photos where you can’t skim past it. The unique perspective and composition means you are immediately trying to figure out what exactly you are looking at,” said Will Nicholls, founder of Nature TTL.
  • For his photograph, Mr Vijayan, a native of Kerala, took home the grand prize of 1,500 pounds and the title of Nature TTL Photographer of the Year 2021. He was adjudged the overall winner of the competition, which saw over 8,000 entries.

  • The nationwide lockdown in March 2020 forced thousands of migrant workers to return to their native villages by covering thousands of kilometres on foot.
  • A new book ‘1232 km: The Long Journey Home’ by filmmaker Vinod Kapri chronicles the journey of seven such migrant workers from Bihar, who journeyed back home on their bicycles and reached their destination after seven days.
  • Kapri accompanied these seven migrant workers — Ritesh, Ashish, Ram Babu, Sonu, Krishna, Sandeep and Mukesh — on their 1,232-km journey from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh to Saharsa in Bihar.
  • It is a story of courage as well as the desperation of seven men braving police lathis and insults, battling hunger and exhaustion to reach their home

World Food Safety Day: 7th June
