PM-DAKSH Portal & PM-DAKSH Mobile App
  • Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr Virendra Kumar today launched PM-DAKSH Portal and PM-DAKSH Mobile App developed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in collaboration with NeGD, to make the skill development schemes accessible to the target groups.
  • Through these portal and app the youth of the target groups will now be able to avail the benefits of skill development training programmes more easily.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Dakshta Aur Kushalta Sampann Hitgrahi, PM-DAKSH Yojana is being implemented by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment from 2020-21.

  • Sarla Thukral, the first Indian woman to ever fly an aircraft, was honoured by Google on August 8, her 107th birth anniversary, with a unique doodle that showcased the extraordinary achievement. The doodle was illustrated by artist Vrinda Zaveri. Thukral left such a lasting legacy for women in aviation that Google decided to run the doodle this year in honour of her 107th birthday,” the company said while explaining the doodle art for today.
  • In the decades since, Thukral’s soaring achievements “have paved the way for generations of Indian women to turn their dreams of flight into reality,” said Google while elaborating on today’s doodle.

  • Union Minister of Culture G Kishan Reddy today inaugurated an exhibition on the Quit India Movement in New Delhi which has been organised on its 79th anniversary today.
  • As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav being celebrated to mark 75th years of Independence, National Archives of India has organised the exhibition.
  • This exhibition displays the most exquisite collections of memoirs, photographs and other records that bring to life the immense contribution of the movement in achieving independence. Ministers of State for Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal and Meenakshi Lekhi were also present on the occasion.

  • Karnataka Government has issued an order to implement the National Education Policy from the current academic year 2021-22. Higher Education Minister Dr CN Ashwatha Narayana has said that Karnataka has become the first state in the country to issue an order to implement the new Education policy.
  • The National Education Policy that aims at increasing the Gross Enrollment ratio in higher education from 26.8 percent in 2018 to 50 percent by 2035 will bring in sweeping reforms in the area of education. Karnataka has been taking steps to implement the policy since it was approved by the Central Cabinet.

  • Rekha Sharma was given a three-year extension as the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), according to an official order.
  • In a notification, the Women and Child Development Ministry said, “Central Government hereby nominates Rekha Sharma as Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, for another term of three years wef 07.08.2021, or till the age of 65 years or until further orders whichever is the earliest.”
  • Ms. Sharma, 57, assumed the charge of NCW chairperson on August 7, 2018. She has been associated with the Commission as a member since August, 2015 and held the additional charge as the chairperson from September 29, 2017 before becoming its regular chief.

Indian Navy Undertakes Naval Exercise With UAE, 'Zayed Talwar 2021
  • Indian Navy undertook bilateral exercise ‘Zayed Talwar 2021’ with UAE Navy on Saturday off the coast of Abu Dhabi.
  • INS Kochi, with two integral Sea King MK 42B helicopters, deployed in the Persian Gulf, participated in the exercise.
  • UAE participated with UAES AL – Dhafra, a Baynunah class guided missile corvette and one AS – 565B Panther helicopter.
  • As part of the exercise, the ships undertook tactical manoeuvres, Over the Horizon Targeting, Search and Rescue and Electronic Warfare exercises to enhance interoperability and synergy between the two navies.

  • The main opposition party in the central American nation Nicaragua has been disqualified ahead of the country’s November elections.
  • The Electoral Council said, the President of the Citizens Alliance for Liberty Party (CXL) holds dual US and Nicaraguan citizenship in violation of the law.
  • President Daniel Ortega has been accused of silencing the Opposition.
  • Earlier on Friday, the US imposed visa restrictions on dozens of Nicaraguans linked to the government.
  • Nicaragua’s Supreme Electoral Council accused CXL of carrying out verbal acts that undermine independence, sovereignty and auto-determination.

US State Dept adds five Islamist militants to its Specially Designated Global Terrorist list
  • The US State Department on Friday announced the addition of five alleged Islamist militants to its Specially Designated Global Terrorist list.
  • It will block any ownership or interests in U.S. properties they hold.
  • They include Bonomade Machude Omar, the Senior Military Commander of Islamic State’s affiliate in Mozambique, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.
  • The list also included Sidang Hitta and Salem Ould al-Hasan, senior leaders of Mali-based al Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, Ali Mohamed Rage and Abdikadir Mohamed Abdikadir, leaders of the Al-Shabaab group of Somalia.

  • In Tokyo Olympics, India’s Javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra created history by winning the first ever Gold Medal in Olympic track and field event.
  • Neeraj Chopra became only the second Indian to win an individual gold in the Olympics, out-performing the field by quite a distance to notch up the first track-and-field Games medal for the country.
  • The 23-year-old farmer’s son from Khandra village near Panipat in Haryana produced the second throw of 87.58m in the finals to stun the athletics world and end India’s 100-year wait for a track and field medal in the Olympics. Chopra won the country’s seventh medal and first gold in this Olympics and joined shooter Abhinav Bindra (2008 Beijing Games) as India’s individual gold winners in the showpiece

32nd Summer Games conclude with closing ceremony at Olympic Stadium in Tokyo

  • After a spectacular 16-day action, curtains came down on World’s biggest sporting event, the 32nd Summer Games with a closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo today.
  • The mega quadrennial event officially opened on 23rd July with a glittering opening ceremony in the Japanese capital. Due to coronavirus protocols, the opening as well as closing ceremonies were held without spectators.
  • The festivities in the closing ceremony began with the raising of the Japanese flag and its national anthem. It was followed by a parade of athletes featuring a single flag bearer from each country.
  • Wrestler Bajrang Punia who bagged a Bronze in Tokyo Olympics, led the Indian contingent out during the parade of athletes at the closing ceremony.

Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan gets Brunel Medal
  • India-assisted Mangdechhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan has been awarded the prestigious Brunel Medal for excellence in civil engineering by the UK-based Institute of Civil Engineers.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the 720 MW project on August 17 last year during his visit to Bhutan.
  • The run-of-river power plant, built on the Mangdechhu River in Trongsa Dzongkhag district of central Bhutan at a cost of Rs 4,500-crore, is seen as a symbol of friendship between the two countries.

National Handloom Day: 7th August
  • Textile Ministry will celebrate the 7th National Handloom Day today. The handloom weaving community will be honoured for its contribution to the socio-economic development of this country. It is a sector that directly addresses women’s empowerment with over 70 percent of all weavers and allied workers being female.
  • Three Handloom Craft Villages at Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Mohpara Village, District Golaghat in Assam and Kanihama, Budgam in Srinagar are being set up by the Ministry in collaboration with the State governments. The aim behind setting up the craft villages is to provide additional attraction for domestic and international tourists and promote the well-known Handloom and Handicraft Products of the region.
  • In the 75th year of independence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the people to buy Indian Handloom products and showcase their grandeur.

  • India first bio bank for heart failure research inaugurated at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and technology.
  • The National Institute of Open Schooling, NIOS, has been selected as one of the winners of the prestigious UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2021 for the programme ‘Enabling education of persons with disabilities through the technology-enabled inclusive learning material, with a focus on Indian Sign Language (ISL) based content’.
