India’s 1st dugong conservation reserve to be in Tamil Nadu
  • The State government in Assembly declared 500 sq.km of the biodiversity-rich waters in the Palk Bay, on the southeast coast of Tamil Nadu, as India’s first dugong conservation reserve. The reserve will span the northern part of the Palk Bay from Adiramapattinam to Amapattinam.
  • Marine biologists and conservationists have long demanded a reserve as the population of dugongs, as known as sea cows, in Indian waters has been dropping to dangerous levels.
  • AS part of the CAMPA-Dugong Recovery Project, various surveys were conducted in the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar, from November 2016 to March 2019.

Eight major banks join the account aggregator network
  • Eight of India’s major banks — State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IDFC First Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, IndusInd Bank and Federal Bank — joined the Account Aggregator (AA) network that will enable customers to easily access and share their financial data. The framework, which has been under discussion since 2016 and in the testing phase for some time, will now be open to all customers.
  • According to the Reserve Bank of India, an Account Aggregator is a non-banking financial company engaged in the business of providing, under a contract, the service of retrieving or collecting financial information pertaining to its customer.

  • As part of India’s ongoing Chairship of BRICS in 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the 13th BRICS Summit on 9th of this month in virtual format.
  • The meeting will be attended by the President of Brazil Jair Bolsanaro, President of Russia Vladimir Putin, President of China Xi Jinping and President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa.
  • The theme for the Summit is BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus. This is the second time Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be chairing the BRICS Summit. Earlier, he had chaired the Goa Summit in 2016.

  • The bilateral exercise – AUSINDEX between Indian Navy and Royal Australian Navy commenced today in Australia.
  • This edition of exercise includes complex surface, sub-surface and air operations between ships, submarines, helicopters and Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
  • The bilateral exercise will continue till 10th of this month.
  • The participating Indian Naval Ships Shivalik and Kadmatt are the latest indigenously designed and built Guided Missile Stealth Frigate and Anti-Submarine Corvette.

  • Mutinous soldiers in the West African nation of Guinea detained President Alpha Conde on Sunday after hours of heavy gunfire rang out near the presidential palace in the capital, then announced on state television that the government had been dissolved in an apparent coup d’etat.
  • The country’s borders were closed and its constitution was declared invalid in the announcement read aloud on state television by army Col. Mamadi Doumbouya, who told Guineans: “The duty of a soldier is to save the country.”

  • Cyrus Poncha, Secretary of Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), was elected the Vice-President of the Asian Squash Federation (ASF) for a four-year term at the 41st ASF annual General Body Meeting held virtually.
  • The other elected VPs are Fayez Abdullah S Al Mutairi (Kuwait) and Tae-sook Heo (Korea). David Mui of Hong Kong was elected unopposed for his second term as President of ASF.
  • Cyrus is the third Indian to become the Vice-President of ASF after N. Ramachandran, the former World Squash President, and Debendranath Sarangi, President of SRFI.

  • Max Verstappen regained the top spot of the Formula One championship standings as he won the Dutch Grand Prix in front of raucous home support.
  • A sea of fans dressed in orange roared loudly as Red Bull’s Verstappen took the checkered flag at Zandvoort, while orange flares were also set off from the stands following the conclusion of the first Dutch GP since 1985.
  • Verstappen started the race in pole and finished more than 20 seconds ahead of championship rival Hamilton, whose Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas completed the podium in third.

  • Mother Teresa’s death anniversary is observed as International Day of Charity on September 5 every year. Mother Teresa, who is known for her dedication towards the downtrodden, died on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87. Mother Teresa’s followers in many parts of the world, including the Philippines, will commemorate Sunday (September 5), as her 24th death anniversary.
  • After her death, Mother Teresa was granted a state funeral by the government in recognition of her services to the poor of all religions in India.
  • Widely known during her lifetime as the ‘living saint,’ Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, which today has spread to different countries.
