Facebook appoints Rajiv Aggarwal as director of public policy in India
  • Facebook India on Monday said it has appointed former IAS officer Rajiv Aggarwal as the director of public policy to define and lead policy development initiatives for Facebook in India.
  • His role focuses on user safety, data protection and privacy, inclusion and internet governance. Aggarwal will report to Ajit Mohan, vice president and managing director, Facebook India, and will be a part of the India leadership team.
  • He joins Facebook from Uber, where he was the head of public policy for India and South Asia.

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya releases FSSAI’s 3rd State Food Safety Index

  • In an effort to galvanize States to work towards ensuring safe food for citizens, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya released Food Safety and Standards Authority of India FSSAI’s 3rd State Food Safety Index to measure the performance of States across five parameters of food safety.
  • The Minister felicitated nine leading States and UTs based on the ranking for the year 2020-21 for their impressive performance. This year, among the larger states, Gujarat was the top ranking state, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Among the smaller states, Goa stood first followed by Meghalaya and Manipur. Among UTs, Jammu and Kashmir, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and New Delhi secured top ranks.

  • The Department of Food and Public Distribution under Ministry of Consumer Afffairs, Food and Public Distribution has entered into a model MoU with CSC e-Governance Services India Limited to increase the business opportunities and income of Fair Price Shops by way of delivery of CSC services through interested Fair Price Shop dealers.
  • The MoU was signed by Deputy Secretary Public Distribution Jyotsna Gupta and Vice President, CSC Sarthik Sachdeva in the presence of Secretary Food and Public Distribution Sudhanshu Pandey and Managing Director of CSC Dinesh Kumar Tyagi.

Commerce and Industry Ministry to celebrate week-long Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

  • Ministry of Commerce and Industry will celebrate week-long Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav from today. Special events and programmes will be organised throughout the week. Department of Commerce will observe the ‘Vanijya Saptah’ beginning today. A slew of programmes and events are being organized across the country highlighting Aatmanirbhar Bharat, showcasing India as a rising economic force and green and Swachh SEZs. Handholding sessions are being organised focusing on ‘From Farm to Foreign Lands’ and exporter conclaves, ‘Vanijya Utsav’, covering all 739 districts of the country.
  • During the Vanijya Utsav to be held on 24th and 26th September, exporter conclaves will be held in more than 700 districts.

  • India has climbed two spots and has been ranked 46th by the World Intellectual Property Organization in the Global Innovation Index 2021 rankings.
  • India has been on a rising trajectory, over the past several years in the Global Innovation Index, from a rank of 81 in 2015 to 46 in 2021.
  • Innovation has been at the forefront of the battle against the unprecedented crisis created by the pandemic and will be pivotal in driving the country’s resilience and self-reliance, as enshrined in the Prime Ministers’ clarion call on Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

6th edition of SCO Exercise Peaceful Mission 2021 commences in Russia
  • The sixth edition of SCO Exercise Peaceful Mission 2021 started at Orenburg Region of South West Russia. The aim of the exercise is to foster close relations between SCO Member States and to enhance abilities of the military leaders to command multinational military contingents. An Indian military contingent comprising of an all arms combined force of 200 personnel from Indian Army and Indian Air force is participating in the exercise.
  • The opening ceremony today commenced with an impressive parade by all participating contingents.

France cancels talks with UK as Aukus row deepens

  • France’s Defence Minister has cancelled talks with her UK counterpart amid the row prompted by a new security deal between Britain, the US and Australia. Paris is angry after Australia signed the Aukus pact to build nuclear-powered submarines, pulling out of a major contract with France in the process.
  • UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said France had nothing to worry about from the deal. But Florence Parly’s meeting with UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace in London this week has been called off. Lord Ricketts, a former British ambassador to France who was due to co-chair the two days of talks, confirmed the meeting had been postponed to a later date.

  • President Ram Nath Kovind today conferred the National Florence Nightingale Award 2020 to Deputy Director General of Military Nursing Service Brig S V Saraswati. She has been conferred the award in a virtual ceremony for her immense contribution to the MNS as nurse administrator.
  • Brig Saraswati as a renowned operation theatre nurse, has assisted in more than 3,000 lifesaving and emergency surgeries and has trained residents, operation room nursing trainees and auxiliary staff in her career.

  • All India Council of Human Rights, Liberties & Social Justice (AICHLS) and Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC ) are jointly organizing 11th International Peace Conference tomorrow to observe International Day of Peace, in Leh.
  • International Peace Day was established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly and designated the Day in 2001, as a period to observe 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. This year’s theme is Recovering Better for an equitable and sustainable world. The Council opines that the global vaccination programme cannot advance amidst armed conflict.

  • Two famous products of Manipur, Hathei chilli, which is found in Manipur’s Ukrul district and is known for its unique flavour, and Tamenglong mandarin orange have been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • India’s Pankaj Advani successfully defended the Asian Snooker Championship at the Al Messila, a luxury collection resort & spa, in Doha, Qatar outplaying Amir Sarkhosh of Iran in the best of 11 frames final.
