AJNIFM partners with Microsoft to build an AI and Emerging Technologies Centre

  • The Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management (AJNIFM) and Microsoft signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a strategic partnership to build an AI and emerging technologies Centre of Excellence at AJNIFM. The collaboration seeks to explore the role of cloud, AI and emerging technologies for transforming and shaping the future of public finance management in India.
  • The Centre of Excellence will serve as a central body for research, AI scenario envisioning and tech led innovation. AJNIFM and Microsoft will jointly explore use cases of emerging technologies in finance and related areas, across central and state ministries and public sector enterprises. Microsoft will partner closely with AJNIFM to define the future of public finance management in India, providing the technology, tools and resources to build a strong ecosystem of partners, upskill government officials and build thought leadership.

Indrajaal - India's air defense dome to counter drones
  • Hyderabad-based technology R&D firm Grene Robotics has designed and developed India’s first indigenous drone defence dome called “Indrajaal”.
  • As per the company, the drone defence dome has the capability to autonomously protect an area of 1000-2000 sq km against the aerial threats by assessing and acting on aerial threats such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), loitering munitions, and Low- Radar Cross Section (RCS) targets.
  • “For the first time in India and many times, globally rogue forces have adopted cutting-edge technologies such as UAVs, Smart Swarms, etc. Jammu Air Base on June 27th was attacked by such technologies to drop explosives next to the Mi-17 hangar,” Grene Robotics stated in a press release.

510 Air Warriors inducted into IAF

  • 510 air warriors from the categories of Automobile technician, automobile filter and Air Force Police trades were inducted into the Indian Air force today. They were given rigorous training at the Mechanical Transport Training Institute and the Indian Airforce police rigorous training Institute at Avadi.
  • Air Commodore S.Sivakumar, Air Officer Commanding 23 Equipment Depot reviewed the parade. Awards were presented to the air warriors who excelled in various disciplines of training. In another passing out parade held at the Air Force Station Tambaram, 308 air warriors were inducted into the Air Force today.

  • The central Government has invited nominations for the Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2022. The awards are given for excellence in the field of Disaster Management. Online application process is open till 31st August at dmawards.ndma.gov.in.
  • Nominated individual or institution should have worked in any area of disaster management, like Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness, Rescue, Response, Relief, Rehabilitation, Research, Innovation or early warning.
  • An individual can apply for the award and also nominate another person or institution.

ILO report on International Migrant Workers

ILO report on International Migrant Workers
  • A new report by the United Nations (UN)-body International Labour Organisation (ILO) has highlighted that the number of international migrant workers has risen globally to 169 million, an increase of three per cent since 2017.
  • The 2019 estimate of the report indicates an increase of five million migrant workers from the 2017 estimate of 164 million migrant workers and an increase of 12.7 per cent from the 2013 estimate of 150 million migrant workers.
  • “While globally migrant workers constitute 4.9 per cent of the labour force of destination countries, this figure is highest at 41.4 per cent in the Arab States.
  • Women constitute 41.5 per cent and men 58.5 per cent of migrant workers

US hands Bagram Airfield to Afghans after nearly 20 years

  • After nearly 20 years, the US military has left Bagram airfield, the epicentre of its war to oust the Taliban and track down the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The agreement with the Taliban on the American pull-out was struck under the administration of President Donald Trump.
  • The airfield was handed over to the Afghan National Security and Defense Force in its entirety. An Afghan official said the base would be officially handed over to the government at a ceremony tomorrow. A US defence official said General Austin Miller, the top US commander in Afghanistan still retains all the capabilities and authorities to protect the force that are stationed in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

WIPO bars Delhi-based firm from using brand name ''Khadi''
  • World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has ordered a Delhi-based firm against using a domain name www.urbankhadi.com, which illegally uses the brand name “Khadi”. The panel’s order came on a petition of Khadi and Village Industries Commission  (KVIC). The panel categorically rejected the arguments of the Delhi-based firm  that the word “Khadi” enjoyed no protection and that nobody had an exclusive right to use the name “Khadi”.
  • KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena said the WIPO’s order will bolster Khadi’s fight against violation of its brand name not only in India but also globally. He said KVIC will take all measures to protect the identity and global popularity of Khadi.

Philippines on alert after Taal Volcano eruption
  • The Philippine seismological agency called for the evacuation of thousands of people near a volcano south of Manila after an eruption sent steam and rock fragments hundreds of metres into the sky.
  • Taal volcano, which sits in a lake, has been belching sulphur dioxide for several days, creating a thick haze over the capital and several surrounding provinces, and prompting health warnings.
  • The last eruption in January 2020 shot ash 15 kilometres high and spewed red-hot lava, crushing scores of homes, killing livestock and sending over 135,000 people into shelters.

India Joins The OECD-G20's 'Inclusive Framework' Tax Deal
  • India has joined the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and G20 Inclusive Framework tax deal of global corporate tax. According to a Finance Ministry press release, the members OECD and G20 countries adopted a high-level statement containing an outline of a consensus solution to address the tax challenges arising from the digitalisation of the economy.
  • The proposed solution consists of two components- reallocation of additional share of profit to the market jurisdictions and minimum tax subject to tax rules. However, the technical details of the proposal will be worked out in the coming months and a consensus agreement is expected by October.

Abhimanyu Mishra becomes youngest Grandmaster in Chess history
  • In Chess, Abhimanyu Mishra made history by becoming the youngest chess Grandmaster, breaking the record of 12 years and seven months set by Sergey Karjakin in 2002. Abhimanyu reached the milestone in 12 years, four months, and 25 days.
  • The 12-year-old player from New Jersey scored his third GM norm in Budapest, having already crossed the required 2500 ELO rating barrier.
  • He went on to defeat 15-year-old Indian GM Leon Luke Mendonca, securing a performance rating higher than 2600 over nine rounds, which constitutes a GM norm.

Indian Navy’s MP Jabir qualifes for Olympics in 400m hurdles

  • Indian Navy’s ace athlete MP Jabir qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 400m hurdles yesterday after he clocked 49.78s to win gold at the recently concluded Inter-State Athletics Championships in Patiala. Jabir qualified through the World ranking quota where there are 14 spots available.
  • The 25-year-old sailor hails from Malappuram, Kerala. He is currently ranked 34th in the World Athletics’ Road to Olympics rankings where 40 athletes qualify.
